Need help or advice?There are many organisations in New Zealand that provide support depending on what you are looking for. Here you will find some of them.
Depression or suicide crisis helplines
- Depression.org.nz: This website is full of ideas and stories to help people with depression and anxiety get to a better place. They also run a free 24/7 helpline. Phone 0800 111 757 or text 4202.
- Lifeline – a telephone counselling service that provides 24 hours a day, 7 days a week counselling and support. Phone 0800 543 354.
- Mental Health Foundation – provide free information and training, and advocate for policies and services that support people with experience of mental illness, and also their families/whānau and friends. Phone 09 623 4812 or email [email protected].
- Suicide Crisis Helpline – provides support, information and resources to people at risk of suicide, family/whanau, friends affected by suicide and people supporting someone with suicidal thoughts behaviours. Phone 0508 828 865 (0508 TAUTOKO).
General
- Samaritans – Samaritans’ mission is to reduce suicide. They are there when you need to talk about the really hard stuff. Call their all-day helpline on 0800 726 666.
- What’s Up – A safe place for you to talk about anything at all. Phone counselling is available Monday to Friday, 1pm-10pm and weekends, 3pm–10pm on 0800 942 8787. Online chat is also available at 7pm–10pm daily.
- Youthline – Youthline works with young people, their families and those supporting young people. Phone 0800 376 633 or free Text 234. You can also email Youthline at [email protected] or visit their website for an online chat with a counsellor.
- Kidsline – 24/7 helpline for children and young people, run by specially trained youth volunteers, 0800 54 37 54 (0800 KIDSLINE).
