Neurodivergent Parents & Carers Crisis Support (NZ)

If you’re supporting a neurodivergent person (or you’re neurodivergent yourself) and things feel unsafe, overwhelming, or urgent — you are not alone. This page gives calm steps, crisis options, and region-based urgent support.

🧠 Neurodivergent-friendly 🧡 Carer support included 📍 Region-based help 💬 Text / chat options
Trigger / content warning: This page discusses mental health distress, crisis support, and safety planning.
If you are in immediate danger, call 111 now. If you can, reach out to a trusted person and use one of the options below.
Disclaimer: Aspie Answers is an education and directory resource — not a crisis service. Phone numbers and services can change; if something doesn’t connect, call 111 or use Healthline 0800 611 116.

Start here (right now)

1) Reduce stimulation (quiet, dim lights, minimal talking).
2) Ask one clear question: “Are you safe right now?”
3) Offer two choices: “Text or call?” / “Sit together or go for air?”
4) Take one step — then reassess (you don’t have to solve everything today).

Choose the support path that feels right

📞 Call a crisis team (urgent)

If things feel unsafe, call your local crisis team. If you’re unsure which one, use the region section below.

💬 Text / chat support

If speaking is hard, use NZ text and chat options to get support without pressure.

🧠 Calm & grounding tools

Small steps can help your nervous system settle enough to choose your next action.

🧡 Support for you (parent / carer)

You may feel frightened, exhausted, or stuck. You deserve support too — not just “being strong”.

If you’re supporting someone you love

What to do (simple, neurodivergent-friendly)

• Use short sentences and one question at a time.
• Offer two choices (not ten).
• Avoid “why” questions during distress (they can increase shutdown).
• If meltdown/shutdown is happening: focus on safety + comfort, not problem-solving.
