Leave & Holidays at Work

A gentle international guide to understanding common kinds of time away from work, planning leave, asking questions, returning after time off and finding the right official information for where you live or work.

🌱 A Gentle Information, Legal & Wellbeing Note

Aspie Answers provides general educational information. This page does not replace individual legal, employment, medical, financial or other professional advice.

Leave names, eligibility, payment, evidence, notice requirements and legal entitlements vary by country and may also depend on state, province, territory, employment status, agreement, award or workplace circumstances.

Health, disability, caring, grief and family circumstances can make leave especially personal. Use the page at your own pace, share only information you need or choose to share, and check current official guidance when an exact entitlement or deadline matters.

Understanding Leave & Holidays

Time away from work can be for rest, illness, caring, family, significant life events, public holidays or other reasons. Some leave is a legal entitlement, some depends on eligibility, and some may be an additional workplace benefit.

💜 Rest is part of working life.

Needing time away from work does not mean you have failed. You can use this page one section at a time and check official guidance when you need exact information.

Different Types of Leave

These categories are common internationally, but their names, eligibility rules and legal rights differ by location.

🏝️ Annual Leave / Vacation

Planned time away from work for rest, recreation and personal life.

🤒 Sick / Medical Leave

Time away when illness, injury or health circumstances affect your ability to work.

❤️ Caring Leave

Leave connected with caring for or supporting family, household members or dependants.

👶 Parental & Family Leave

Leave connected with birth, adoption, parenting and other family responsibilities.

🕯️ Bereavement / Compassionate Leave

Time away following a death, loss or other circumstances recognised by local law or workplace policy.

📅 Public Holidays

National, regional or other recognised holidays may affect time off and pay differently depending on location.

🛡️ Family / Domestic Violence Leave

Some jurisdictions provide specific leave or workplace protections for people affected by family or domestic violence.

🌱 Other Leave

Unpaid leave, community or civic leave, long-service leave and other categories may exist depending on your country and workplace.

Planning & Requesting Leave

1

Check

Look at your agreement, policy and local rules.

2

Plan

Think about dates, needs and flexibility.

3

Request

Use the required workplace process.

4

Confirm

Keep written confirmation where possible.

5

Prepare

Plan handover or essential information.

6

Rest

Let leave actually be time away where you can.

Gentle tip: If verbal requests are difficult to process or easy to forget, asking for the process and confirmation in writing can make planning clearer.

If a Leave Request Is Declined

Find Out Why

  • Was the request for a particular date declined, or the leave itself?
  • What does your employment agreement or workplace policy say?
  • Is another date or arrangement possible?
  • Is the leave discretionary or protected by law?

Get the Right Information

If the answer affects a legal entitlement, pay or an important health or family need, check the official employment authority for your location rather than relying only on informal workplace explanations.

Getting Help With a Workplace Problem

Leave, Health, Disability & Neurodivergence

Time away from work can intersect with disability, health, mental wellbeing, medical appointments, fatigue, burnout, caring responsibilities and workplace adjustments.

Different Needs

People recover, process stress and manage energy differently. A strategy that works for one worker may not work for another.

Leave & Adjustments Can Be Different

Sometimes time off is needed; sometimes an adjustment to hours, environment, communication or duties may also be relevant.

Explore Workplace Adjustments

Privacy Matters

How much information you need to provide can depend on the type of leave, evidence requirements and local law. Consider what is required before sharing more personal information than necessary.

Returning to Work After Leave

Reconnect

Find out what genuinely changed while you were away rather than trying to absorb everything at once.

Rebuild the Routine

Use calendars, checklists, written priorities or other supports to re-establish your working rhythm.

Ask for Support

If returning is difficult because of health, disability or another ongoing need, consider whether a workplace conversation or adjustment would help.

🌏 Choose Your Country or Regional Pathway

Leave laws are location-specific. Dedicated country siblings can carry detailed local guidance, while regional cards are navigation doorways rather than one shared legal jurisdiction.

🇳🇿 New Zealand — Important 2026–2028 Update

New Zealand's Employment Leave Act 2026 has now passed into law, but the current Holidays Act rules continue to apply until the new Act starts on 6 August 2028.

The new law will change how several forms of leave are earned, taken and paid. Until its commencement date, visitors should continue using current Holidays Act guidance for their present entitlements.
