Understanding the words

Mental Health Language Should Be Easier to Understand

Mental health information can be full of clinical language, shortened terms, service jargon and words that people hear in appointments, articles, support groups or everyday conversation. This page is designed to make those terms clearer without requiring specialist knowledge.

Diverse people sitting in a cozy learning circle reading and discussing books together.

A master glossary, not every specialist glossary at once

This page gives a broad foundation across mental health. More detailed definitions for specific areas such as mood disorders, trauma, medication, neurodiversity or therapies can sit in their own specialist glossaries and feed back into this master page.

That means you can get a useful plain-language overview here without losing the option to go deeper later.

Language matters

Language & Respectful Terminology

Mental health language can sound very different depending on whether it comes from a person, a support group, a clinician, a service, research, media or the law. A respectful approach includes:

  • Using plain language where possible so information is easier to understand.
  • Avoiding judgemental wording that blames or shames people for distress or support needs.
  • Remembering that diagnosis is not identity for everyone and that people may relate to terms differently.
  • Explaining jargon rather than assuming everybody knows professional shorthand.
  • Listening to lived experience and how people describe themselves, their needs and their recovery.
