🚗 Road Trips & Long Drives
I’ve travelled across different parts of Aotearoa/NZ, from Cape Reinga and the Bay of Islands to Rotorua, Taupō, and down to Christchurch, Timaru and Queenstown.
These trips often involved group travel (like going with TatouTatou from Palmerston North), boats, bush walks, and facing fears around heights, water and new places.
As an autistic traveller, long drives can be both calming and overwhelming. Music, snacks, water and planned breaks help me stay grounded and enjoy the journey.
North Island Adventures
Cape Reinga & 90 Mile Beach, Bay of Islands, Rotorua (Zorb, Redwoods Forest), Waitomo region caves and Huka Falls.

✈️ Airports & Flights
Airports can be loud, bright and unpredictable — which can be a lot for autistic and ADHD travellers.
Over time I’ve learned to build little routines around check-in, security and boarding to reduce the stress.
Arriving early so I’m not rushing or overwhelmed by queues
Wearing comfortable, familiar clothes and layers for temperature changes
Using headphones, music or podcasts to block out noise
Keeping water, snacks and a small comfort item close by
Having a “plan B” if seating or flight times change suddenly

🎒 Packing & Sensory-Safe Travel
Packing isn’t just about clothes — it’s about feeling safe, prepared and as regulated as possible while away from home.
This is where sensory-safe travel really makes a difference.
Some essentials that help me:
Comfortable, soft fabrics that don’t itch or irritate
Noise-reducing headphones or earbuds
My phone, playlists and calming music or prayers
Water bottle and safe snacks that don’t upset my stomach
Lightweight layers (hoodies, cardigans, scarf)
A small grounding object (like a stone, bracelet or fidget)

🌿 Nature Walks & Day Trips
Nature has always been a calming space for me. Some of my favourite memories come from gentle walks and day trips:
Watching the power of Huka Falls and the blue of the water
Time at Lake Taupō and around nearby walks
Palmerston North Esplanade – especially the rose gardens
Exploring beaches and lighthouses around Timaru and other coastal spots
When I choose nature spots, I look for quieter paths, water sounds, greenery, birds, and places where I can sit and breathe without feeling rushed.
