Educational support and signposting only. Not a substitute for professional advice. If you are in immediate danger, call 111 (NZ).
If you feel in immediate danger, or you can’t keep yourself safe right now, use urgent support.
If calling feels too hard, texting 1737 can be a strong first step.
Chat/text can feel safer when speaking is hard — especially during panic, shutdown, or overwhelm.
You can type slowly, pause, and re-read what you want to say.
Helpful if you feel mute, frozen, anxious, or worried about being overheard.
Many services can guide you through the next safest step.
If you’re not sure what to write, you can copy/paste one of the starter messages below.
Texting can be easiest to start. Chat can be helpful if you want a longer conversation.
Try: “I’m not okay and I need help.” or “I feel unsafe and I don’t know what to do.”
They may ask where you are (rough area), if you’re safe, and what support you need.
It’s okay to send: “I’m overwhelmed. Please ask me one question at a time.”
Sometimes there’s a queue. If you’re getting worse while waiting, use urgent help.
They may ask what’s happening, how safe you are, and what support you have around you.
They aim to keep things confidential, but may need to act if there’s immediate risk.
You may be encouraged to contact a trusted adult, GP, crisis team, or emergency services if needed.
If you don’t know what to say, you can send: “Please guide me. I need help and I’m overwhelmed.”
If typing isn’t enough, you can switch plans quickly.
