Māori Whānau, Parents & Carers Support

Supporting someone you love through mental health distress can feel heavy and exhausting. You deserve support too — with care, connection, and culturally safe options.

If anyone is in immediate danger: call 111 right now. If you can, stay with the person, remove anything unsafe, and ask for urgent help.

What to do right now (simple steps)

  1. Check safety first. If there’s immediate danger, call 111.
  2. Stay connected. Sit with them, keep your voice calm, and breathe slowly together.
  3. Call support. Use the regional crisis numbers below or a 24/7 helpline.
  4. One small next step. Ask: “What would help for the next 10 minutes?” (water, a quieter room, someone trusted).
  5. You matter too. If you’re the carer/whānau member, you can also ring for guidance and support.

Tip: If you’re unsure what to say, start with: “I’m worried about someone I care for. We need help and advice right now.”
